A major northern seaport between the Yellow River and the Yangtze, Tianjin is located only 30 minutes southwest of Beijing via the high speed train connection. It’s the fourth largest city in China, with a metropolitan area population of more than 10 million. Many visitors are keen to ride the Eye of Tianjin, a ferris wheel built over the Yongle Bridge on the Hai River rising nearly 400 feet where one of the 48 passenger cars provides a half hour spin for the views.

Tianjin Embraces Old World and New World Hospitality
On the hotel front, the art deco-style Ritz-Carlton opened in October 2013 is the latest luxury property to join the five-star roster. As the tenth property from this brand to open in China, Westin, Sheraton, Hyatt Regency, Renaissance, and the Astor Hotel Luxury Collection by Starwood are among the western chain properties represented locally.
Featured on lists of top ten things to do in the city, the Astor Hotel museum is recommended as tops. This is considered China’s oldest hotel, re-opened following an 18-month renovation in 2010. Visitors step into the city’s first elevator, see the first phone in China, and emerge themselves in a world of discovery around the hotel’s 150-year history. Clips and stills from more than 100 films made using the hotel as a movie set are on display. Visitors may learn about Peking Opera stars and international stars who frequented the hotel in years gone by. They may read up on Sun Yat-Sen and Zhou EnLai, Tainjin’s most famous native son, and find out about the businesss that Ulysses S. Grant and Herbert Hoover conducted here. Combining a museum visit with a tea service in the English décor lobby for the makings of a fine afternoon, European-style. Note that admission is 50 RMB to the museum, but is free of charge for hotel guests.
Three restaurants and two lounges are found within the Astor. The brand new Ritz-Carlton houses four restaurants including all-day dining with an open kitchen. Tian Tai Xuan is a Cantonese specialty dining spot with ten private dining rooms, a lobby tea lounge and cocktail lounge. Flair features sushi and Tianjin’s first cigar bar, plus a DJ in the evenings.
Visit the memorial to Zhou EnLai, first premier of the People’s Republic of China, and his wife, Deng Yingchao, the pioneer of Chinese Women’s Movement in the 20th century. Explore Tianjim by bicycle; just take a tandem rental to enjoy Tianjin’s tree-lined Five Great Avenues neighborhood.
