Make Mine Milano

milanThese days, lots of five-star hotels have great chefs and luxurious spas. But, this one has a Chocolate Room? We love it. Surrounded by top Italian designer shops from Armani to Zegna, The Four Seasons Hotel in Milan has an enviable position in a one-of-a-kind conversion crafted from a 15th century convent. Food is as important here as style. Guests canindulge in Chef Sergio Mei’s or make their own, as cooking classes are held every Saturday morning. We love that, too. P.S. Do not miss the vaulted swimming pool.

More styles? Fans will say you cannot beat the Bulgari Milano for surprise and delight, with its gorgeous interior garden adjoining the posh black oval bar.

Cozy up to the Duomo and the Galleria at the Park Hyatt. Dressed in shades of aubergine and winter squash, the contemporary interiors are the flip side of the Italianate presentation found elsewhere. Think Italy, think of food. The only Michelin star to be found in all of Milan is VUN, in the Park Hyatt. Interiors resemble the hotel’s interiors: cool, calm, collected.

The Westin Palace and the Principe di Savoia from the Dorchester Collection (swimming pool = tick!) face one another across the piazza. Five-star and long-favored, both properties hark back to the 20s and 30s. Dining options are smart, casual with outdoor seating in fine weather.

What’s next for the city where Leonardo da Vinci’s 15th-century masterpiece “The Last Supper,” resides and style matters? Milan is preparing to host the 2015 Expo from May 1 to October 31. The next world’s fair is subtitled, “”””Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,”” with a mascot designed by Walt Disney World. It will be interesting to see where style comes into play with that theme.
