The capital of Argentina is well known to be European-like with its broad tree-lined avanues such as Avenida de Mayo, pretty parks and Parisian-style sidewalk cafés with names like Croque Madame.
Yet, some say the city has an emerging personality infused with Porteños, as the natives are called. Argentinian cuisine as presented by Tomo I, run in the past by the Concaro sisters for 40 years, has gained its steadfast place among the world’s top 50 in the S. Pellegrino line-up.
There’s nothing more local than a meal focused around the world-famous Argentinian beef. Sample “parrillas” at Sucre, La Cabrera, La Brigada, Don Julio. It’s commonly said to be steak so tender you’ll be tempted to to eat it with a spoon. Paired with a bottle of Malbec, and it’s easy to understand the wait for a table. or go for French at Chila or La Bourgogne in the Alvear Palace Hotel.
Faena & Universe Hotel may be even better known for its award-winning restaurant, El Bistró, than for its accommodation, although with clever and whimsical interiors by Phllippe Starck and a tango show in the theatre, that would be quite a challenge. Called “Insanely cool” by one TripAdvisor guest for its “modern interiors and molecular gastronomy,” even the restrooms are worth a visit. A second restaurant, El Mercado, receives equal praise, and of course, there’s a pool bar, too.
The Four Seasons is traditional and tasteful in a Belle Epoque mansion with spa and a Mediterranean-sytle dining experience at Le Mistral. Marriott, Hilton, Park Hyatt, InterContinental and Sheraton all fly the flag and the Alvear Palace is often called among the very best in B.A. luxury hotels.
